Devinder Sharma is well-known and respected internationally for his work on
food and trade policy. The major themes of his policy research concern
sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and intellectual property rights,
environment and development, food security and poverty, biotechnology and
hunger, and the implications of the free trade paradigm for developing
countries.
Trained as an agricultural scientist, subsequently working as a Visiting Fellow
at the International Rice Research Institute, UEA Norwich and Cambridge
University, Sharma has also been the Development Editor of the Indian Express.
He now chairs the independent New Delhi-based Forum
for Biotechnology & Food Security which examines and analyses the
implications of relevant Indian and international policy decisions.
Sharma has written many books including GATT to WTO: Seeds of Despair and
In the Famine Trap. His newest publication GM
Food and Hunger: A View from the South was prepared for the World Social
Forum at which he chaired the major panel on Food Sovereignty. He speaks
on these issues widely and most recently at the launch, in Switzerland, of the
2004 International Year of Rice.
