DEVINDER SHARMA
Chair of the Forum for Biotechnology and Food Security (India)
Devinder Sharma, Chair of the Forum for Biotechnology and Food Security (India), is a noted Indian journalist and outspoken critic of industrial agriculture, genetic engineering, globalization and free trade. Trained as an agricultural scientist, he later became the Development Editor of the Indian Express – one of the largest selling English language dailies in India. He has held positions of visiting fellow at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines; the School of Development Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK; and the University of Cambridge, UK. He actively participates in a number of national and international committees, including the CGIAR’s Central Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property Rights. A very active writer, Sharma has a syndicated column in 11 newspapers across India and his articles are also published elsewhere. His books include GATT and India: The Politics of Agriculture (1994), GATT to WTO: Seeds of Despair (1995), In the Famine Trap (1997) and Keeping the Other Half Hungry (forthcoming). In 2000 he was awarded the Chaudhary Charan Singh Award for excellence in Agriculture Journalism.
