At least six people were arrested in Cincinnati yesterday after a peaceful protest against an international trade meeting got out of hand. About 350 to 400 protesters gathered to draw attention to the Transatlantic Business Dialogue, two days of meetings involving about 90 corporate executives from Europe and the United States and about 100 international trade officials. Rebecca Smith, 20, of Toledo, said she came to the city to spread the message "that the people aren't going to stand for corporate rule anymore." The demonstration ended with a rally in the city's central plaza, but then many of the protesters formed a loud and impromptu march off the assigned parade route. Some broke through barricades and scuffled with police, above. A mounted police officer, at right, confronted a protester waving a stick. Several windows were broken in the demonstration. |
