How to
Get Off
Mailing Lists
Why Do I Get JUNK MAIL?
The way you get onto a junk mail list is that each time you enter a contest,
make a donation, buy something on credit or with a check, or order a product by
mail or send in a subscription or warranty card, order something online, there
is a good chance that your name and address will be added to a mailing list.
These lists are valuable commodities that are regularly sold or traded.
One large reason junk mail companies exist at all is because of the extremely
reduced rates offered to them by the USPS for large quantities of presorted
mail. It is highly probable that if the extremely low rates were not available,
junk mail would nearly cease. Getting off the lists is not permanent and must be
done periodically. In order to make a change in the practices of the USPS, one
must become an active part of that change.
What Can I Do to Stop JUNK MAIL?
With a few steps, you can minimize unwanted mail and continue to receive the
mail you really want.
- Here’s what you can do to reduce unwanted mail:
- Write, call or email organizations requesting that your name and address be removed from their mailing list. If there is a pre-paid postage return envelope, insert a note requesting removal of your name and address from mailing lists. Be sure to include the original mailing label with your name and address. The label often has special codes that make processing your request easier, and help assure removal of your name.
- If there is an 800-telephone number listed, call to request removal of your name and address from mailing lists. 3. Write or call mail list brokers and ask to be placed on their “suppress” files. Listed here are just a few of the many organizations that you can contact to have your name removed or “suppressed” on mailing lists.
