CHANDIGARH: The finale to the Millennium Meet of the Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons saw a live demonstration of a surgery to correct Hypospadias, one of the commonest abnormalities in boys.

Hypospadias is the condition wherein the penis' opening is not at the tip but at the back and below and is corrected through a surgery which takes about four hours.

Dr Snyder, who is the chairperson of the Surgical Treatment in Children with the WHO International Committee on Incontinence in Children, told The Times of India News Service that child genitalia abnormalities are on the rise both frequency-wise and in severity. He attributes the rise in part to environmental impacts: 'One in a 100 male births has this abnormality. The environmental chemicals, the man-made chemicals in the form of pesticides and certain organic components in plastic, are the villains of the piece playing havoc with both the male and female genital system. Female fertility has decreased and cancer of the testis is on the rise.' It is to Dr Snyder's credit that the US Department of Health conducted a governmental survey to start the process of awareness about the interlinked abnormalities, both in man and in nature.
