Russian Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant Closed

Russia's first nuclear power plant reactor, in the city of Obninsk, south of Moscow, was shut down yesterday, because, as Russian Mayak radio reported, its further operation became pointless. The radio station reported that the reactor had come to the end of its life after almost 50 years in operation. The power plant will now be turned into a museum, though the shutdown process will take up to four years.


Obninsk Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering

The Institute was founded as a unique Russian educational institution, which trains the specialists in Nuclear Power Engineering. But several years ago it began to vary its educational programs.

The fact that the Institute is situated in the science city such as Obninsk gives advantage in the matter of teaching staff. The Institute teaching staff includes 7 academicians, 47 professors and 130 PhDs. The Institute also boasts several research laboratories and sometimes uses the laboratories of the city scientific research institutes.

Main specialities: nuclear physics, maintenance of technical equipment, hydrodynamics and thermal physics, physical chemistry and radio-chemistry, materials technology, radio-biology and radio-ecology, applied mathematics and cybernetics, economics and management, information systems, psychology.
