Florida Power and Light Accused Of
Sending Nuclear Waste To Pasture

MIAMI — One of Florida's biggest electric utilities is accused of mishandling nuclear waste, exposing the public to the toxic material.

A spokeswoman for Florida Power and Light acknowledged the utility sent a shipment of nuclear waste to a farm pasture by mistake. FPL said it cleaned up the waste in the farm field.

Documents filed in two lawsuits appear to show the company also sent the waste to sewage treatment plants and other unknown locations.

The level of contamination is a point of contention between the company and the parents of two children afflicted with cancer. Those cases are set for trial next year.

The New York Times reported the lawsuits allege plant workers used a sink to wash contaminated mops, rags and other materials, believing the drain was connected to the plant's radioactive waste system.

The utility acknowledged the drain went into a sanitary sewage system.
