Pekka Haavisto is the head of the Post-Conflict Assessment Unit (PCAU) is the unit of UNEP that facilitated the assessment of depleted uranium in Kosovo
[Text of Dr. Doug Rokke Speaking in Los Altos, CA 21apr03]
Dear Doug,
Unfortunately also our capacity to work on this issue is limited since UNEP has also so many other environmental commitments. We have just published our DU report on Bosnia-Herzegovina (see: http://postconflict.unep.ch) and we had meetings in Sarajevo and Banja Luka just last week. UNEP is proposing a clean-up for contaminated buildings.
On the Irak-Kuwait 1990-1991 IAEA has been carrying out a study in Kuwait last year. They have informed that the report will be published this Spring. The IAEA report might be a very useful source to find out what is the current situation in the region now.
Yours sincerely
Pekka Haavisto
Pekka:
You are most welcome. Can you help us ensure Iraq and Balkans and Vieques and Okinawa are cleaned up per these guidelines and that medical care is provided for "ALL" DU casualties? I am still unable to get medical care for most of US confirmed DU casualties not to mention thousands of others.
take care and thanks for your efforts,
doug
