SAN FRANCISCO—The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday said nine nuclear reactors in four U.S. states were shut following a massive blackout that hit the Northeast United States and Canada.

"At this point, we have nine reactors that are offline. And there is no timeline as to when these will return to service," NRC spokesman Scott Burnell said.

Burnell said the reactors, in New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Michigan, could not return to service until the electricity grid is put back into service. The nine reactors generate a total 7,949 megawatts.

The plants closed in New York are the 951-megawatt Indian Point 2, the 1,027-MW Indian Point 3, the 762-MW Fitzpatrick, the 565-MW Nine Mile 1, the 1,105-MW Nine Mile 2, and the 470-MW Ginna 1.

The other reactors shut were the the 619-MW Oyster Creek facility in New Jersey, the 1,320-MW Perry 1 in Ohio, and the 1,130-MW Fermi 2 in Michigan.
