Alcoa might idle recycling unit ‘indefinitely’

BYRON ROHRIG / Courier & Press (Indiana) 15mar01
YANKEETOWN, IN. — Alcoa Warrick Operations probably will idle the beverage-can portions of its aluminum recycling operation “indefinitely.”

But spokesman Mike Belwood said the Warrick facility would continue to use recycled scrap in its production.

About 48 workers now employed in the targeted area would be reassigned, most of them within their own department in the ingot plant, Belwood said.

Belwood declined to discuss reasons why the move is being anticipated.

“A lot of factors come into play when you look at how to supply metals to the system,” he said.

The aluminum producer operates Alcoa Recycling Co., which supplies the company’s system of production facilities that includes Warrick.

But according to Belwood, that operation won’t be affected.

“All this means is that they’ll be telling a truck to deliver (reclaimed aluminum) somewhere else instead of here,” Belwood said.

He said amounts of aluminum involved could not be disclosed for “competitive” reasons.
