Lilly Names New CFO,
Derica Rice
Wall Street Journal 24feb2006

Eli Lilly & Co. has named controller Derica Rice to succeed Charles E. Golden as chief financial officer after Mr. Golden retires April 30, the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical maker said.
Mr. Rice, currently vice president as well as controller, will become a senior vice president. He earlier served as general manager of Lilly's United Kingdom affiliate and executive director of finance for European operations.
"Derica has a history of sound decision-making and a record of strong leadership in a variety of roles here at Lilly," said Lilly's chairman and chief executive, Sidney Taurel. "He is very well-prepared for the vital role he will play, and I look forward to having him join our senior leadership team."
Mr. Golden joined Lilly as financial chief and a member of the board of directors in 1996, after 26 years at General Motors Corp., where he had been corporate treasurer in New York and president of GM's Vauxhall Motors in England. Lilly said that Mr. Golden will retire from both his posts.
"Through Charlie's leadership, we have built a world-class financial organization and strengthened Lilly's reputation for sound financial operations, transparency in our financial reporting and strong internal controls," Mr. Taurel said.

The incoming chief financial officer at Eli Lilly and Co. is a 16-year company veteran who will become the highest-ranking black at the Indianapolis drug maker.
Lilly on Thursday named Derica Rice, 41, as its top money man to replace Charles E. Golden, who is retiring April 30 after a decade in the job.
"Derica has a history of sound decision-making and a record of strong leadership in a variety of roles here at Lilly. He is very well-prepared for the vital role he will play," said Lilly President Sidney Taurel in a statement.
Rice has been a vice president and controller since 2003. He joined Lilly in 1990 as an international treasury associate after earning a master of business administration degree from Indiana University. He quickly climbed the corporate ladder, becoming director of finance for Lilly Canada, executive director of finance for European operations and general manager for the United Kingdom affiliate.
Rice, a native of Decatur, Ala., said he has a "quite similar" business outlook to Golden and worked closely with him for the past three years.
Rice's new role includes occasionally taking part in Lilly's quarterly earnings teleconferences, answering questions from Wall Street analysts.
Rice also serves on Lilly's diversity leadership council, which aims to improve Lilly's efforts to create a diverse work force and serve an increasingly diverse customer base.
Rice's wife, Robin, is a marketing research manager for Lilly. They met at IU, Rice said, when he was assigned mistakenly to a women's dormitory because his first name sounded female. They have three sons.
Golden, 59, was hired away from General Motors in 1996 to be Lilly's CFO.
He handled the company's finances when its then-top-selling drug, Prozac, lost U.S. patent protection early, plunging Lilly into a financial crisis.
"Through Charlie's leadership, we have built a world-class financial organization and strengthened Lilly's reputation for sound financial operations, transparency in our financial reporting, and strong internal controls," Taurel said.
Golden also will step down from Lilly's board of directors. There are no current plans to replace him on the board, company spokesman Philip Belt said.
A native of Fort Wayne, Golden received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Lafayette College and an MBA from Lehigh University.
He serves on numerous boards. He is a member of the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority. He serves as a director of Clarian Health Partners and Hillenbrand Industries. He is on the board of trustees of Park Tudor School and the finance committee of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
