Kirin Freezes Program for
Genetically-Enhanced Tomato

Kirin Brewery (2503) said August 24 that it is freezing its efforts to develop longer-lasting tomatoes using genetic engineering despite a measure of success the company has found in the five-year-old program. In halting the program, Kirin is bowing to consumer fears about foods using genetic technology. It promises not to continue R&D on tomatoes for the time being and to substitute unaltered corn for the genetically-enhanced corn it has been using as a beer ingredient.
