Doug Durdan of Durdan Grain near Leonore, Ill., unloads a truck of corn Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000. Farmers and grain
shippers across Illinois are trying to figure out how and how much genetically
engineered corn not approved for human use has entered commercial stocks and may
be on its way to the nation's groceries. Major grain shippers such as Archer
Daniels Midland Co. are rejecting shipments that test positive for the
prohibited variety and some agriculture officials fear the so-called StarLink
corn is mixed in with corn approved for human consumption and in some cases may
have contaminated it in the field. Among numerous local grain elevator operators
who have been refused by ADM is Doug Durdan of Durdan Grain near Leonore, Ill.,
who has had one truckload turned down. That load came from a 1.7-million bushel
storage facility, Durdan said, and he has no way of knowing how much more if any
is still there. "If it's all contaminated, I don't think I can get much for
it," Durdan said, unloading grain Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000. Photo by Seth
