Brazilian Study Points to Average Loss of 9 bags per Hectare Correio do Povo, Porto Alegre, Brazil 11apr02

Below is the (somewhat basic) English translation based on the original article which has appeared on an Brazilian agricultural web site. http://www.agrolink.com.br/agrolinknoticias/detalhe_noticia.asp?vcodigonoticia=2308 If this story is true - heavy yield losses, insect infestation and other agronomic problems of transgenic soy in Brazil - then the implications for the technology would be substantial. Already there is evidence of depressed yields and other agronomic problems in the US. SEE: Troubled Times Amid Commercial Success for Roundup Ready Soybeans If we have understood the translation correctly the report below appears to claim that illegal growing of GM soy (using seed smuggled from Argentina) is costing Brazil $200 million per year in lost profits arising from the poor performance of the GM varieties. GM yields seem to be one third lower than normal varieties. NATURAL LAW PARTY WESSEX |
A study elaborated for professors of genetics of the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the University of Londrina, points damages in the order of R$ 200 million with respect to the agriculturists who had opted to the plantation of genetically modified soy in the crop of this year. The research - carried through in March in plantations of transgenic soy of the region of the Missions - was delivers to governor Olívio Dutra yesterday by representatives of the MPA, MAB, MST and of ViaCampesina. ' the conclusions strengthen the political speech of the government of the State, opposed to the plantation of GMOs.
' The study carried out on seeds smuggled of Argentina, known as Mercedes 70 and Maradona, still presents an average loss of 9 bags per hectare. The average productivity of transgenic plantations, according to research, was of from 17 to 20 bags per hectare while the yield of the conventional soy was was of 28 30 sacks/ha . The authors of the scientific work, Rubens Nodari from Santa Catarina, who has researched transgenics for 14 years, and Deonísio Dextro from Paraná, who has researched soy for 22 years, denounced that, when subjected to heat, the modified soy presents cracks in the stem. They still told of the attack of insects as ' burrinho ' to the oleaginous plant and the harmful lack of immunity to the plagues and grasses, that, for becoming more resistant, compels the producer to double the dose of herbicide. According to coordinating of the MPA, Sergio Görgen, the losses in the area of 1 million ha cultivated in the RS with transgenic varieties will be of 9 million sacks in 2002. According to the secretary of Agriculture, Ângelo Menegat, specialists will analyze the report and invite the scientists to a debate with soy growers. The presidents of the Emater, Lino de David participated in the meeting , and Robert Carbonera of Fepagro, and the coordinator of the Department of Vegetal Production of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply, Marta Levien.

'As conclusões reforçam
apresenta rachaduras no caule.
Marta Levien.
