Poland plans to ban importing and planting 17 varieties of Monsanto Co.'s genetically modified corn seed for two years, an official from that country's Farm Ministry said.
Reuters reported that Poland would be the second European country to ban genetically modified maize, or corn. Hungary banned the planting of Monsanto's MON 810 hybrid seeds earlier this year. Austria, France, Greece, Italy and Luxembourg have similar bans.
The European Commission must approve Poland's request, which could take a month or two, said Wieslaw Podyma, deputy director of Poland's Farm Ministry, in the report.
St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) develops insect- and herbicide-resistant crops and other agricultural products.
