"Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act"
Senate Bill 906 in New Mexico

Press Release / GE Food Committee, Rio Grande Chapter,  Sierra Club 15feb2005

[Text of SB 906]

Senator Grubesic has introduced the "Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act", Senate Bill 906.

State Senator John Grubesic (D), Santa Fe, has introduced Senate Bill 906. The title of the bill is the "Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act".

The purpose of the Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Act is to create and enforce the fundamental right of the people of New Mexico to know if they are buying or eating genetically engineered food and to have the choice in buying or eating food that has been altered through genetic engineering.

The labeling bill would apply to food derived from genetically engineered components and dairy and meat products that have been fed genetically engineered feed. The labeling would also indicate if animal genes have been transferred into plants, allowing vegetarians to observe their dietary guidelines.

Enforcement of the labeling will be done by the New Mexico Department of Environment. The bill would become effective on January 1, 2006.

Polls show that over 90% of Americans want GE food labeling. This bill provides New Mexico consumers the information they need to make informed decisions about their diet.
