Kansas State U.
Form Biotech Deal
St. Louis Business News 9may03
Monsanto Co. and Kansas State University in Manhattan are teaming up to form a corporation to sell genetically modified soybean seeds, Reuters reported.
KSU plans to launch a non-profit company this summer called Wildcat Genetics, which will sell a "parent seed" that combines Monsanto's Roundup Ready technology with some of KSU's germ plasm.
William Schapaugh, a soybean expert at the university, told Reuters the university and Monsanto are coming up with some material useful to Kansas producers.
The university hopes to gain a 20 percent market share with its new seed. About 3 million acres of Kansas farmland is planted with soybeans each year, KSU said.
St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. develops insect- and herbicide-resistant crops and other agricultural products.
