Farmers to get $1-billion in aid from Ottawa
TERRY WEBER / Globe and Mail (Canada) 29mar2005
Ottawa delivered $1-billion in aid to Canadian farmers Tuesday, aimed at helping offset the impact of closed U.S. borders and hardships in other areas of the agriculture sector.
Federal Agriculture Minister Andy Mitchell made the announcement in Guelph, Ont. Similar announcements were scheduled to be made in other regions of the country later in the day.
“We believe it is absolutely essential that this take place,” Mr. Mitchell said, unveiling the plan.
He also said it was critical that the government address underlying issues in the sector that have resulted in problems for farmers.
