What is the definition of a Bad Person?

[More by Paul Goettlich]

What does it take to be considered a BAD PERSON?
Is it enough to just go through the day scowling?
What if that scowler wore distasteful clothes?
                Or bathed much too infrequently?
Or had the flatulence of the largest of ruminants — perhaps a rhino?
Or if that person were the homeliest, smelliest, loudest and most unpleasant person?
        What say you to that?
Would that suffice to be labeled a BAD PERSON?

How much would you consider too much — over the line?
If that person drives a car to go only one block?
But maybe in a Prius — it’s quite PC, right?
Perhaps it's a V-8 Chevy. Now that might be too much, eh?
Or what if the vehicle of choice is a Hummer?
Not yet there? Not over the line?
What if the Hummer were driven by that smelly, loud, most unpleasant person?

When is too much just plain too much?
If that smelly, loud, most unpleasant Hummer-driving person blocks your driveway?
And they park there all night playing Barry Manilow at full volume?
All the while, severe gastroenteritis from their enchilada dinner tripped car alarms around the block?
And in the morning, after a sleepless night,
You see it’s such a beautiful day and all’s forgiven
But the Hummer’s gargantuan right-front tire has crushed your dog’s skull
And its eyes are bugging out.

Where do you draw the line?
What if that smelly, loud, most unpleasant Hummer-driving person
Who likes to play Barry Manilow or Iron Maiden at full volume
While crushing the skulls of living animals and
Does so in foreign lands under the flag of your nation?
And what if it's done right at home, in your own nation?
All the while the numbers of innocent deaths are rising?
All our rights are being snuffed by congress?

Why is it that none of our leaders have drawn the line?
It has been crossed so many times
Back and forth, to and fro, around and around through the revolving door
Until all is blurred in a brain fog of grief,
Anger and disbelief of the depth to which a species can plunge.
When the numbers are in the thousands, do you scream?
What if they reach the millions or billions, do you stand naked in street screaming, pounding on the Hummer’s hood?
And what if all systems are crashing — is that enough?

What if the person obeys all laws?
        Is highly intelligent?
A god-worshiping model of society and civilization
Gives millions of dollars and hours to all the right charities and
Is your sister or brother or cousins by the dozens?
What if the person is everyone around you? — or you or me?
And all know but completely deny what is happening
Just to keep their spirits up and not be party-poopers?
