Sample Letter to Decision Makers

Please send letters to your legislators (state and federal) to promote education and regulations reducing mercury pollution in Indiana.

Example:

(Please feel free to use this letter or put it in your own words. Information from the report can be used too.)

Dear Elected Official;

As a resident of Indiana, I would like to see more initiative being taken to protect the health and well being of Hoosiers--ourselves and our children. Mercury contamination poses a threat to all of us. I would like to see a commitment made to protect Indiana’s valuable water resources--lakes and rivers. I should not have to worry about whether my next meal of fish contains unsafe levels of mercury. I want my children to be able to eat fish. They should be able to catch and eat fish from Indiana lakes and rivers without worry.

There are actions you can take to prevent further contamination from occurring. I encourage you to do so. I encourage you to work with other legislators in surrounding states in order to provide regional solutions to mercury pollution. I encourage you to ask state agencies what they are doing to solve the mercury problem and to educate Hoosiers about mercury contamination. I encourage you to learn more about mercury source reduction plans and seek to apply them here in Indiana. The well being of our families, communities, and surroundings depend on it.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
